from SMALL WORLDS is a collection of seventy paper-cuts in eight sets.
Wassily Kandinsky produced a folio of twelve prints entitled Kleine Welton (1922), but in its scope and intent SMALL WORLDS was inspired more by Bela Bartok's pedagogical work Microkosmos (1926 - 1937), comprising 153 pianoforte pieces ranging from the most elementary five-finger exercises to highly developed works for four hands. In its way too, SMALL WORLDS is a didactic work which moves through elementary visual design exercises in black and white — for example, Point and Line to Plane and Meet and Join — to systematically structured, chromatic studies of increasing complexity. The series SMALL WORLDS was conceived and commenced in 1979 as a reinterpretation and investigation of themes of concern to pioneers of the constructional programme in the visual arts. Seventy paper-cut pieces are shown here from the 120 originally produced. Two works have since been replaced by newer versions as digital prints: Point and Line to Plane, 2002/6 (reduced from 34 to 10) and Meet and Join, 2008 (retained at 16).
